"RAM, ROM,HARD DISK, FLOPPY DISK, CD-ROM"

RAM:

•RAM stands for Random Acess Memory.
•It is the internal memory of the CPU for storing data, programs, and program results.
•It is a read/write memory which stores data until the machine is working. As soon as the machine is switched off, data is erased.
•Acess time in Ram is independent of the address, that is, each storage location inside the memory is as easy to reach as other locations and takes the same amount of time. Data in the Ram can be accessed randomly but it is very expensive.
•Ram is volatile, that is, data stored in it is lost when we switch off the computer or if there is a power failure. Hence, a backup uninterrupted power system (UPS) is often used with computers.
•Ram is small both in terms of its physical size and in the amount of data, it can hold.

TYPES OF RAM:-

a).SRAM:
•SRAM stands for static Ram.
•The word static indicates that the memory is retains its contents as long as the power is supplied. However, the contents are lost when power gets down due to volatile nature.
•SRAM chips use a matrix of 6 transistors and no capacitors.
•It is having low packaging density.

b).DRAM:-

•DRAM stands for Dynamic Ram.
•It is made up of capacitors.
•It reauires an additional refreshing circuitory as capacitors need charge. The refreshing circuitory refreshes the capacitors every 2 milliseconds.
•DRAM has higher packaging density.

ROM(READ ONLY MEMORY):
•ROM stands for Read Only Memory.
•The contents on this memory can not be changed once written. Writing data is also known as burning.
•It is generally used to store data which needs to be read only such as, movies, sound files, device drivers, etc.

TYPES OF ROM:

a).PROM:
•PROM stands for Programmable Read Only Memory.
•When we purchase an empty CD from market, it is actually PROM, means data can be written on it. When we write data on it (known as burning), it becomes a ROM and the contents can not be changed thereafter.

PROM is of two types:

(i). USER PROGRAMMED PROM:

•It is programmed by the user to store its personal data by using its computer system or PC.

(ii). MANUFACTURER PROGRAMMED PROM:

This is generally provided by the manufacturer. It generally contains device drivers, OS, support softwares, etc.

b).EPROM:

•EPROM stands for Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory.
•It is special type of PROM which can be programmed again and again.
•The contents can be changed, deleted, or added whenever user wants.
•This type of memory provides a special advantage of reuseability and adding/deleting data as per user requirements.

•It comes in two categories:

(i). UVEPROM:

•UVEPROM stands for Ultra-Violet Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory.
•In this type of EPROM, the contents can be deleted by directly exposing it to UV-rays.

(ii). EEPROM:

•EEPROM stands for Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory.
•In this type of EPROM, both reading and writing are done electrically using PCs, Laptops, etc. The contents of it can be erased electrically.

HARD DISK:

•It is the mostly used online secondary storage device.
•It consists of several disk platters enclosed in a strong steel and fiber cabinet.
•It consists of magnetic disk which stores the snooze value of data.
•It is connected by a bus or cable with the CPU, offering persistent strorage.
•Types are zip disk or bernaulli disk, warm disk, disk fact, etc.

FLOPPY DISK:

•It consists of light plastic disk coated with magnetic material enclosed in a strong plastic jacket for protection.
•It is having a slider to let the read/write head access the disk.
•It is having a read/write notch which protects data from unauthorised writing/ editing.
•3.5 and 5.25 inches are the two sizes.
•Storage space is around 1.28 mb.

CD-ROM:

•CD-ROM stands for Compact Disk Read Only Memory.
•It is spin of audio CD technology and works much like audio CDs.
•It is shiny silver colour metal disk, usually 5.25 inch(12cm in diameter).
•It is made up of poly- carbonic plastic with thin layer of aluminium coating to make its surface.
•Storage capacity is around 700 megabytes.
•These disks come in pre-recorded format and user can not alter information stored on them.
•As reading operation is from center to outer edge, different sizes for these disks are possible.

TYPE1:
120mm
74/80min
650mb-700mb

TYPE2:
80mm
21min
184mb
